Oscars 2013

The Academy Awards are over and even though I missed about an hour of the show due to my weekly appointment with my friends in Zombieland a.k.a. The Walking Dead, I watched enough to know that:

  1. Ben Affleck has come a long way from Gigli and Jersey Girl
  2. Jennifer Lawrence has unseated Emma Stone as the young actress to watch right now;
  3. Adele continues to be amazing
  4. Lincoln's loss of steam awards wise undoubtably helped Argo and Life of Pi a lot!
  5. Christoph Waltz and Quentin Tarentino together = Oscar Gold

I have not seen Life of Pi, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour, or Zero Dark Thirty but plan to. I did see Django, Silver Linings, and Lincoln a.k.a. Celluloid Ambien and was not surprised Daniel Day Lewis won but was hoping for an upset in that category or in the category of Best Supporting Actress which went to Anne Hathaway. Upsets make these shows more interesting don't you think? Sound off below on your thoughts on the Oscars. Do you think the right people won? If not, who should have?

Rihanna's MAC Collection

When it comes to branding herself, Rihanna has the game on lock! Who knew the Barbadian singer with the soft vocals who burst onto the scene in 2005 with Pon De Replay would be one of pop music's biggest stars today.

Well not only is she around, but Ri is winning Grammys, selling out arenas, making moves in the fashion and fragrance world, and just yesterday it was announced that she is collaborating with MAC Cosmetics on four collections.

The line will debut on May 4th of this year and will be sold at pop up shops at Ri's tour stops as well as in department stores. The line will be available through the 2013 holiday season. Below is a look at one of the collections.

Will any of you be buying once the collections hit stores? Hit me up in the comments below!

Yolanda Opines On Beyonce's Saturday Night Takeover and Safe Haven

So much entertainment news to write about, so little time. Let' s start with the Saturday night takeover of Beyonce Knowles on OWN and HBO. I wasn't all that impressed with the Oprah interview, and the documentary that followed started off slow. My interest peaked once the talk turned to Bey's marriage, miscarriage, and the birth of Blue Ivy. I have always been a fan of strong women of color who know how to take care of business while successfully navigating their careers and relationships, and Bey proved that she is a champion in this respect. She may not be the most charismatic interview, but B is definitely a power player in business and her work ethic is off the chain!

The movie Safe Haven came out on Valentine's Day, and it was just as good as the book it's based on. Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough were very charismatic together and after the supremely disappointing The Lucky One I was happy to see a Nicholas Sparks adaptation with two leads that worked well together.

I know I am a few days late with my opinions but life sometimes gets in the way. What were your opinions of the Beyonce interview and doc, and if you have seen Safe Haven,  do you agree it was a good movie? Sound off below!

Hello I Must Be Going : My Review

Any of you that know me, know that indie movies are my favorites because in my opinion they have the best stories. Hello I Must Be Going is one of those stories. The film stars Melanie Lynskey (Rose from Two and A Half Men) as Amy, a recent divorcee living with her parents who spends her time sleeping in, watching old Marx Brothers movies, and basically getting under her overbearing mother's (Blythe Danner) skin and garnering sympathy from her lawyer father (John Rubenstein).

When Amy's parents decide to have a dinner party, Amy meets the son of one of her father's colleagues and things begin to turn around for our protagonist who has been basically holing herself up in her parent's home ever since her hubby left her. Amy knows that starting an affair with a 19 year old isn't the smartest thing to do, but Jeremy makes her feel good about herself which is something her mother and husband have never done.

Christopher Abbott plays Jeremy, Amy's lover who is a co star on the series Girls and he does a very good job as a young actor trying to find his way from up under his therapist mom's thumb who after seeing him convincingly play a gay man on stage is convinced her son is gay. Only after falling for Amy is he prepared to live the life he really wants to live.

This movie is funny, dramatic and a great way to spend a weekend evening if you are looking for a good movie to watch at home!

Kerry Covers Ebony Magazine

Kerry Washington is the It Girl of the moment. Django Unchained is still making beaucoup dollars at the box office, Scandal's ratings are going up by the week, and the NAACP recently made her the big winner at this past week's Image Awards. Seeing her on magazine covers has become a regular thing, and I must say Kerry being the March cover girl for Ebony is well deserved. Kerry is a class act who has made great strides in the last several years. I look forward to seeing what's next for the star of Black America's favorite water cooler show!
